EDITOR’S NOTE

Each week during football season, the Rome News-Tribune plans to talk with area drum majors about their high school bands.

Football season has kicked off, and leaders of the Model High School Marching band are determined to ensure that their band adds a musical twist to the Friday night lights experience.

This year’s drum majors for Model High’s band are Emily Shepherd and Branden Tello.

As the band performs on and off the field, the drum majors provide commands through hand gestures to lead the band.

While Band Director Tim Burton oversees the band students and their performances as the main administrator, Emily and Branden play significant roles of leadership, group representation and instruction.

Both leaders have been in the band since sixth grade and enjoy playing music.

Emily, a senior, plays the clarinet in the high school band and played the violin from second through sixth grade. Then she switched to the viola and now performs with the Oak Hill Symphony Orchestra.

As only a sophomore Branden, who plays the trumpet, has risen to drum major and said he really enjoys being a part of the band.

The Rome News-Tribune recently caught up with Model High School’s drum majors Emily and Branden to talk about their band.

RN-T: As a leader of the band, what responsibilities do you have?

Branden: As a leader, I have to keep the band together, and I must know my music inside out so I can answer any questions the members have.

RN-T: What are your goals for your fellow band members, and how are you going to achieve them?

Emily: My goal for the band this year is to do our best and grow closer as a family.

RN-T: What is your favorite part about being in the band?

Branden: My favorite part would have to be that I get to travel a lot and meet new people.

RN-T: What music will the Model High School band feature this year?

Emily: This year our halftime show will feature music from “The Phantom of the Opera.”

RN-T: Do you plan to pursue music in college?

Branden: Yes I do plan to continue with music in college because I love the band.

RN-T: What are your hopes for rising band members as they progress in band through high school?

Emily: I hope that all the members of the band have fun, work hard, and make lasting memories.

Chelsea Latta, a senior at Model, is an intern with the Rome News-Tribune.
