The Calhoun boys’ soccer team won their first game of the Jekyll Island Tournament on Thursday. Calhoun defeated Jackson County 3-1.

It wasn’t pretty but we still won,” said CHS coach Ruben Maldonado.

The Jackets fell down 1-0 with six minutes to go in the first half and the score remained that way to halftime.

“We were not playing to our full potential,” Maldonado said to his team at halftime. “This is not a Calhoun team I wanted to see.”

The Jackets responded in the second half with three goals.

The first came at the six minute mark as Francisco Lopez found the back of the net off an assist by Luis Cervantes.

Cervantes then hit his stride with two goals, one at the 20 minute mark and the second 30 minutes into the second half. Hector Flores assisted on the second goal.

“He took care of business,” Maldonado said of Cervantes play. “He is little but he is quick and he was the player of the game.”
