After just two days of state tournament action, the local area is down to two survivors among the 10 teams that qualified for the postseason.
On Saturday, five Greater Rome girls teams — Pepperell, Model, Armuchee, Calhoun and Darlington — were eliminated with first-round losses.
One night earlier, the Greater Rome area had gone 0-3 in the boys’ tourney, with Rockmart, Chattooga and Darlington each losing.
The only two teams still standing from Greater Rome are the Rome High girls (in Class AAAA) and the Trion Lady Bulldogs (A). They will each be in action in Wednesday’s Sweet 16.
During Saturday’s games, Model’s girls were plagued by turnovers in a 63-43 loss to No. 2-ranked Buford, and Armuchee’s girls were limited to three second-half field goals — all of them coming in the final minute — during a 59-41 loss to Lovett.
The Pepperell girls, making their first tourney appearance since the 1967 season, fell to Blessed Trinity 61-57 in Lindale, and Calhoun dropped a 55-29 decision to Greater Atlanta Christian in Norcross.
In Class A, there was a split decision among the local teams, as Darlington lost to top-ranked Wesleyan, 97-31, and Trion downed ELCA, 46-37.
Overall, it was a brutal weekend for Region 7-AA, which went 0-8 in the opening round.
The boys teams from Rockmart, Chattooga, Dade County and Temple all endured losses on Friday, followed by the quartet of girls teams (Pepperell, Armuchee, Model and Calhoun) that were erased on Saturday.
It was also difficult weekend for Floyd County teams, who combined to go 1-5 in the opening round. The Rome High girls are now left to carry the Floyd County banner after they earned an easy 72-32 win over Forsyth Central at home.
