Five local wrestlers will be returning home from the Arena at Gwinnett Center with state titles — and a lot of pride.

Rome’s Randy Roden and Immanuel Kerr-Brown, Darlington’s Spencer Jones and Kevin Sherrill and Calhoun’s Hunter Knight all won state championships on Saturday at the state wrestling tournament.

Roden took first in the Class AAAA 171-pound weight class to cap off a perfect 44-0 year by defeating Lloyd Martell from Rockdale County with an 8-2 decision.

Kerr-Brown defeated the two-time defending champion in Class AAAA at 135, Joe Denova, with a 1-0 decision.

“Randy had a pretty dominating performance,” said Rome coach Wesley Styles. “I’m really proud of him and looking forward to having him back next year.

“We knew Immanuel’s match was going to be tough. It was one of those matches where the one that made a mistake was going to lose.”

Darlington’s Jones defeated Bremen’s Alex Eriquezzo in the Class A 140-pound finals with an 11-5 decision. Teammate Kevin Sherrill won at 171 over Commerce’s Tyler Austin by major decision, 18-8.

Knight won his championship over Ricky Nunez of Lovett at 152 in Class AA by technical fall, 19-4.

Sonoraville finished fourth in the team standings in Class AA. Their highest finisher was Aaron Hatch, who was the runner-up at 215 after losing in the finals to Zach Allen of Jefferson.

Zane Holder (189) and Brandon McBee (140) both finished third in their weight classes for the Phoenix, while Andrew Bingiel (171) and Jamie Phillips (152) finished fifth.

Also in Class AA, Pepperell’s Dylan Ingle finished third at 215, and Jordan Worthey was fourth at 125.

In Class A, Trion’s Elvino Filipe lost a 13-7 decision to Bremen’s Ryan Eriquezzo to finish as runner-up at 125.

Along with their two champions, Darlington also had Luke Maffett take third at 145, and Lucas Jennings finish fourth at 130.
