Big third quarter gives SHS boys 69-50 victory over Cartersville

The Phoenix basketball team outscored Cartersville by 20 points in the third quarter and then cruised to a 69-50 victory on Saturday.

Sonoraville (3-0) started the game with a 9-2 run but the Purple Hurricanes (0-1) fought back and took an 18-13 lead after the first quarter. Sonoraville played hard in the second quarter and they were able to cut the lead down to two by halftime.

In the third quarter the Phoenix took flight as they scored 28 points. Cartersville was able to outscore Sonoraville 16-14 in the final quarter but the damage had already been done.

“I thought our guys played with tremendous effort,” said SHS Head Coach Brent Mashburn. “Cartersville is very athletic, and a big basketball team, and I felt like we made up for that with our effort, especially on the defensive end of the floor.”

Sonoraville committed only 13 turnovers in the game.

Justin Zachary led the offense with a game high 29 points. He also added five rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocked shots.

Adolphus Allen added 18 points and nine rebounds. Greg Mulkey also scored in double digits with 10. Tucker Blaylock and A.J. Daniel scored six points each. Blaylock added six rebounds and Daniel had six assists.

TyQuan Glaze led Cartersville with 14 points.
