The Sonoraville girls were able to pull away in the second half as they beat Cartersville 62-50 Saturday night.

The Lady Phoenix (3-0) held a slim 27-25 lead at half time but outscored the Lady Purple Hurricanes 18-13 in the third quarter and 17-11 in the fourth.

“I thought we played well tonight against a solid team… it was a total team effort,” said SHS Head Coach Stephanie Caudell. “We got contributions from a lot of different girls.”

Kailey Vaughn led the scoring for Sonoraville with 16 points. Alicia Ray followed with 13 points and also added six assists. Noelle Defoor just missed a double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds. Hannah Smith added eight points.

“It was exciting to see sophomore Kailey Vaughn step up and have a big game at post,” said Caudell. Senior Alicia Ray shot the ball well from outside, knocking down three three-point shots.”

The team combined to shoot 77-percent from the line.

For Carterville, Sarah King led the team with 12 points and both Carlee Bragg and D’Yasmine Richards netted eight points each.

“Hopefully the win will give us a little confidence heading into our first region crossover games this week,” Caudell concluded.”
