Using a mixture of big plays on offense, storming defense, and some triumphs on special teams, the Yellow Jackets knocked off their cross-town rival Gordon Central, 56-14, in front of a standing-room only crowd at Phil Reeve Stadium.
The win marked Calhoun’s 63rd consecutive victory over a region opponent.
“They’re the No. 1 team and they deserve it,” said Gordon Central coach Chad Fisher. “Coach (Hal) Lamb has done a good job with them.”
The Yellow Jackets compiled 382-yards of total offense, much of it orchestrated by quarterback Nash Nance and his favorite target Da’Rick Rogers. Nance was 5-for-7 through the air for 148-yards and three touchdowns. Nance threw two TD passes to Rogers and one to J.T. Palmer, who caught a ball tipped by Rogers. Rogers had 120 yards receiving for Calhoun (5-0, 1-0). Both Nash and Rogers called it a day before halftime.
Dre Prather passed for 133-yards for Gordon Central (2-3, 0-1) in the loss.
“I like the way our defense is playing,” Lamb said. “We have a good set of linebackers I feel confident with. Up front is playing well and I can’t say enough about Brett Walraven. There are a bunch of kids playing well.”
Gordon Central failed to capitalize on two early Calhoun turnovers and was unable to control Rogers and Nash during their brief cameos. G.C.’s Jarod Nolan picked off a Nance pass on Calhoun’s first drive of the game, but Gordon Central punted after three plays and Calhoun scored on its ensuing possession. On Calhoun’s next possession, the Yellow Jackets fumbled and Gordon Central followed it up with a missed field goal. Again, Calhoun scored on its next possession and it was a 15-0 game. Calhoun’s Hunter Knight blocked a punt on Gordon Central’s next possession and Kelby Holbrook took it in for a touchdown. With 3:19 to play, Calhoun led 22-0. The Jackets scored on their next three possessions and led 42-7 at the half.
It has been a tough couple of weeks for the Warriors, who lost to previously unbeaten Pepperell last week. Fisher and his Warriors now look to Adairsville at home next week.
“We’re still growing,” Fisher said. “The kids are growing up and learning to play the game of football. It’s up to us to compete and get better. This was just our first subregion game; there is still a lot of football to be played.”
Calhoun is at unbeaten Chattooga next week.
“Chattooga has a lot of speed and if we don’t show up ready to play, we’ll get beat,” Lamb said.
