Now that the final pitch has been thrown and the last championship team has been crowned, the local prep baseball community turns its attention to another important segment of the year: Postseason awards.
This Sunday, the Rome News-Tribune will announce its All-Area team and its Player of the Year after a memorable season of baseball action in Greater Rome.
The squad will be comprised of players from the 14 area schools — Adairsville, Armuchee, Calhoun, Cedartown, Chattooga, Coosa, Darlington, Gordon Central, Model, Pepperell, Rockmart, Rome High, Sonoraville and Trion.
The team will mark the final RN-T All-Area selections of the school year. In previous selections, the RN-T has honored the following individuals as the Players of the Year:
- Football: Rome’s Vann Calhoun (Defensive); Pepperell’s Brandon Whitaker and Calhoun’s Michael Johnson (Co-Offensive Players of the Year)
- Softball: Calhoun’s Maddie Monroe.
- Wrestling: Rome’s Immanuel Kerr-Brown and Rome’s Conor Young (Co-Wrestlers of the Year)
- Basketball: Coosa’s Ieshia Alexander (female); and Model’s Fernando Lemus and Darlington’s Tyshawn Good (male Co-Players of the Year).
- Soccer: Calhoun’s Josh Gregory (male); Calhoun’s Julia Binnicker (female)

MODEL HOSTING SUMMER CHALLENGE
The Model High baseball program is hosting its second annual Blue Devil Summer Challenge, which got under way on Thursday.
The round-robin tourney, which runs through Saturday, features eight teams: Model, Pepperell, Rome, Coosa, Trion, LFO, Fannin County and Haralson County.
Here’s a look at Friday’s schedule:
10:45 a.m. – Coosa vs. LFO
1:15 p.m. – Fannin vs. Haralson
3:45 p.m. – Coosa vs. Rome
6:15 p.m. – Pepperell vs. Haral. Co.
8:30 p.m. – Model vs. Trion
