Greater Rome prep roundup: Pepperell sweeps tennis matches

The Pepperell tennis teams are continuing to do well in region play as they swept Coosa on Tuesday, with both the Dragons and Lady Dragons winning 4-1.

In the boys competition, Pepperell’s Hunter Treglown won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Josh Evans took the No. 3 spot 6-2, 6-1.

The Dragons (10-4) took both doubles matches as Brandon Treglown and Hudson Whitfield won their No. 1 doubles match 6-4, 6-2 and Colton Jerris and Justice Purser took the No. 2 contest in three sets, 6-4, 7-6, 6-1.

Coosa’s Cody Carr took the No. 1 singles spot with a score of 6-2, 6-2.

For the girls, Coosa’s Jessica Barnes won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1.

Pepperell (11-3) won the rest of the matches: Jegnasha Patel won at No. 2 (6-1, 7-6, 6-3) and Brittany Mathis took No. 3 in straight sets.

No. 1 doubles was taken by Ashley Patty and Katy Smith (4-6, 6-1, 7-5) and Amber Popham and Kayla Robinson won at No. 2 doubles (6-0, 6-2).

In other action:

BASEBALL

Model 4, Rockmart 2

Matt Davis had three hits and Ryan Leonard didn’t give up a run as the Blue Devils picked up a Region 7-AA win on the road.

Leonard threw a complete game while spreading three hits and striking out four. He had two hits and an RBI, as did Model teammate Caleb Ratliff.

Jordan Brooks had an RBI and Weston Tate had two hits for the Devils (7-3, 5-3).

Darlington 7, Bremen 0

Brice Baker tossed a two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts as the Tigers (8-1, 2-0) earned a 6-A win on the road.

Lee Couch was 4-for-5 for Darlington with two doubles and a RBI. Evan Brooks went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Gordon Central 7, Sonoraville 2

Justin Patterson rolled up seven strikeouts in a complete-game effort while leading the Warriors to a 7-AA win.

Devon Oesterle had two hits and two RBIs for Central (3-9, 3-5). Bradley Mason and P.J. Haney added two hits each.

Adairsville 8, Chattooga 4

Adairsville’s Joseph Hales went the distance and finished with nine strikeouts to guide the Tigers (10-2, 7-1) to a win. Hales allowed three earned runs.

Matt Taylor led the offense with three hits and an RBI.

Drew Suttles added two hits and drove in two runs, and Cymon Farmer and Bo Edwards both had two hits and an RBI. Hales also had two hits and Cody Kremer drove in a run.

BOYS SOCCER

Calhoun 4, Gordon Central 0

Ahead 1-0 at the half, the No. 8-ranked Yellow Jackets added three more goals in the second half to pull away.

Calhoun (11-0, 3-0) was led by Miguel Moreno, who had two goals, and Francisco Lopez had two assists.

Colin French and Javier Salazar had a goal each and Sam Maldanado and Micheal Butler each had an assist. Calhoun keeper Josh Gregory had seven saves.

NW Whitfield 3, Darlington 2

Darlington played tough against the Class AAAA Bruins at home but saw a 2-0 lead slip away in the second half.

Evan Echols had an unassisted goal for the Tigers (4-3) and then assisted Will Orr on another score before halftime.

Dade County 3, Sonoraville 1

Cody Patterson scored the lone goal for Sonoraville off an assist by Richard Davis in the Phoenix road loss

Adairsville 3, Model 2

The visiting Tigers defeated Model with a 4-3 advantage in penalty kicks after going through regulation and two overtime periods tied 2-2.

The Blue Devils (2-6-1) had a 2-1 lead early in the second half after a header by Adam Crump and a goal by Taylor Meeks.

GIRLS SOCCER

Model 4, Adairsville 2

Shelby Farrer, Taylor Gilleland, Bekah Sapp and Lauren Shields scored one goal apiece to lead the Lady Devils (5-3-2) to a home win.

Shields also had an assist for Model, which visits Coosa on Thursday.

Chattooga 7, Rockmart 0

Chattooga keeper Autumn Johnson had eight saves while earning the shutout in goal during the 7-AA match.

Kimmie Barnes, Shadow Day and Kandie Adams scored two goals each for the Lady Indians (4-4-1, 2-2), and Sandie Adams had one.

GOLF

Darlington wins

Sneh Patel carded an even-par 36 to grab medalist honors and help Darlington post a win in a three-team match at Coosa Country Club.

The Tigers shot a team-total 151 while downing Holy Innocents’ (156) and Calhoun (159).

Darlington’s Will Jones fired a 37 and Taylor Winn had a 38. They were followed by Hunter Brooks (40), Jack Yancey (42) and Jim Matthews (42).

Model girls down Darlington

Model’s Courtney Cunningham had a match-low 56, and the Lady Devils’ earned a six-shot win over host Darlington at Coosa County Club.

Dylan Davis had a 69 for the Lady Devils, who finished with a team-total 125.

For Darlington, Allison Hubbard shot a 62 and Courtney Statham had a 69.

LACROSSE

Darlington boys 8, Pace Aca. 6

William Waters scored three goals, and Connor Somerville and Gavin Tumblin had two each to help Darlington stay unbeaten with a win at home.

Charlie Breen had 19 saves for the Tigers (7-0).

Rick O’Neal added one goal and William Gilbert had one assist for Darlington, which hosts Wellington today.

Walton girls 19, Darlington 4

Anna Fox had 10 saves, and four Darlington players found the net, but the Lady Tigers dropped a home match.

Erin Ables, Kim McAbee, Morgan Ware and Chandler Holcombe had one goal apiece for the Lady Tigers (2-6-1). Holcombe also had an assist.
