Calhoun defeated Richmond Academy 2-0, Jonesboro 4-0 and Brunswick 7-0. All three of these schools are classified as 4A.
The wins put the Yellow Jackets record at 9-0 overall and 2-0 in region play. All nine victories have been by shutout.
To give an idea at how impressive nine straight shutouts is, the 2004 and 2008 Calhoun soccer teams recorded only eight shutouts all season long, which was a school record at the time.
Leading the impressive defense in 2009 are Michael Butler, Josh Gregory, Sam Maldonado, Jonathan Clark, Collin French and Cameron Budzius.
“You will never see Butler on the ground. He is as solid as a linebacker,” said head coach Ruben Maldonado. “He is also a leader on the team and what ever he says the team does.”
Gregory is the goalkeeper for the Yellow Jackets. He worked hard to solidify a starting role at the net this season.
The team, which wasn’t ranked going into the season, came out of the Jekyll Island tournament ranked eighth in the state.
“Every coach wants to make it to the state championship every year,“ said coach Maldonado. “This is the team that will bring home Calhoun’s first state soccer championship.”
