Perhaps the most amazing aspect of Model’s amazing season has been this: Despite the absence of a go-to player, the Lady Devils just keep going.

For that very reason, they’re going to Macon — headed there for this week’s Final Four and carrying their undefeated record with them.

The No. 2-ranked Lady Devils (30-0) earned a berth in the semifinals — their first since 1997 — by battling past No. 7-ranked Greater Atlanta Christian, 62-52, on Saturday in front of a packed house at The Forum.

“All season long, we’ve just kept talking about believing in ourselves,” said Model guard Taylor Martin, who hit a key 3-pointer in the third quarter. “And oh my gosh, now that we’ve made it to the Final Four … this is just an awesome feeling for us.”

The Lady Devils, who will face Henry County on Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Macon Centreplex, earned the victory over GAC (21-10) in typical Model manner.

Defense, patience, and yes, balanced scoring, were once again the key elements for the Lady Devils, who had three players in double figures and three others who scored seven points each.

“It was a total team effort, just like it’s been all season,” said Model coach Sally Echols, who played for Model’s ’97 Final Four team. “And that is what has made this such a special season. … We don’t have any superstars. Instead, they’re all superstars. Night after night, we get contributions from everyone.”

Maci Siniard finished with a game-high 13 points, Alexa Evans added 11 and Janaye Jasper had 10 to lead Model’s offense. Alex Patton, Joy Hoskins and Shelby Farrer had seven points apiece while helping the Lady Devils maintain their magical season.

“We never would have imagined anything like this when the season started,” said Farrer, the team’s senior center. “It’s just unreal for us. I’m pretty much speechless.”

Fittingly, Model earned its trip to the Final Four by executing well in the final four minutes.

Nursing a 49-48 lead midway through the fourth period, Model used a jumper by Jasper to spark a 13-4 game-ending run. The Lady Devils went 9-of-14 from the foul line down the stretch, and finished 23-of-30 from the line overall.

“I am so proud of our girls because it would have been easy for us to lose our composure after we let (a nine-point lead in the third quarter) slip away,” said Echols. “I thought we did a good job of staying under control.”

Greater Atlanta’s Chaney Means scored a game-high 21 for the Lady Spartans (21-7), who have now been bounced from the tournament by a Greater Rome team for two consecutive years. Last season, they lost to Coosa, at home, in the Sweet 16.

But make no mistake: GAC gave Model a stiff test. They led the game on four occasions in the first half, and stayed within striking distance until Model put together the late run to finally pull away.

Model guard Joy Hoskins ultimately punctuated the win with a buzzer-beating lay-up. After that, the celebration was on for the Lady Devils.

“We were definitely going crazy in there (the locker room after the game),” said Farrer. “We just pretty much let it all out.”

Model trailed 15-13 at the end of the first quarter, and was down 17-15 early in the second. But the Lady Devils outscored GAC, 13-6, over the final seven minutes of the first half to build a 28-23 lead.

Alexa Evans hit a 3-pointer during the surge, Hoskins added a conventional 3-point play and Patton hit a pair if big free throws to fuel the surge.

GAC tied it at 28-28 early in the third period after a long 3-pointer by Means, but Model answered with an 11-2 run — which featured two 3s by Evans and one by Martin — to rebuild a 41-32 lead.

The Lady Spartans trimmed the margin to one point on two occasions in the fourth quarter, but Model never surrendered the lead. The jumper by Jasper with 4:01 left gave Model the momentum for good.

Now, it’s on to Macon, where the Lady Devils hope to put a perfect ending on their perfect year.

“It’s been a dream season, it really has,” said Echols. “But I’d like to think we’re not done yet.”

Martin agreed: “We’re happy we won today, but we’ve still got room to improve. Hopefully, we can put every thing together in Macon.”
