After almost six innings of scoreless play between No. 3 ranked Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe and No. 4 ranked Ridgeland, it became apparent that somebody was going to have to be the hero.

Haley Lawson of Ridgeland quickly answered the call.

The junior launched a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning off of LFO junior Jessica Penney to give Ridgeland a 1-0 win in a big Region 6-AAA contest.

Lawson said she knew if she didn't "step up" someone else would. She was happy she was able to help her junior class defeat the Lady Warriors for the first time in their high school careers.

"It was a rise ball," Lawson said. "She hung it up there and I caught it just before it rose."

Ridgeland's winning pitcher Jessie Forrester was equally excited about her 13th victory of the season against one loss.

"We just wanted to beat LFO," she said. "That's what we've always wanted to do."

Forrester struck out two and walked one in the game.

Lady Warriors' Head Coach Tony Ellis said Penney threw well enough to win the game.

"They got the big hit when they needed it," he said. "We didn't execute and make the plays when we needed to. That's what it all boils down to."

Ridgeland is now 14-1 overall and 3-0 in the region while LFO fell to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in region play.
