RINGGOLD - The Sonoraville Phoenix opened the 2008 season with a 42-6 win over the Heritage Generals Friday night.

After a rough first half, the Phoenix played tough football, scoring twice int the third quarter. The first score came after a 33-yard pass from Y.J. Glover to Tyler Brookshire put the ball on the 1, where Glover carried it over on the next play. Glover also carried for a two-point conversion, and the Phoenix led 30-0 with 7:38 left in the game.

Five minutes later, Shaqueal McAfee scored from 10 yards out to make it 36-0.

Early in the fourth quarter, Bly Jordan scored from the 4 to make it 42-0.

Heritage's only score came with 3 minutes left in the game when Brad McDonald scored from the 2.

Sonoraville had scored early in the first quarter after a bad snap on a Generals punt was recovered on the 1.

Glover sneaked in for the score and carried the two-point conversion to give the Phoenix an 8-0 lead just two minutes into the game.

After holding the Generals on th e next possession, Sonoraville got a good drive going but lost the ball when Robert McAfee fumbled at the Generals' 26-yard line. Three plays later, the Phoenix were back in business after Trent Payne intercepted Austin Allen’s pass at the 40. But two plays later McAfee fumbled the ball again.

The Phoenix defense stood tall forcing another Heritage punt. Sonoraville’s next drive seemed to be bogged down by penalties, but Glover’s passing and runs by Kenny Brooks, Zack Washington, McAfee, and Jake Denton took the ball to the Heritage 5, where Glover carried over for the touchdown. He followed up with another two-point conversion.

Sonoraville's third touchdown of the first half came after Demarius Washington intercepted an Allen pass.

Washington then carried the ball for a 30-yard touchdown on the next play.

The kick was blocked but the Phoenix held a 22-0 lead at the first half.

With 1:41 left on the clock Glover took the Phoenix down field throwing a 30 yard strike that put the ball on the Heritage 25. Three plays later, with one second left on the clock glover threw at incomplete.

Phoenix Coach Chuck King said the win showed his team is maturing. "We need to keep playing like this and learn not to commit penalties and I think we'll win a few more of these this year."

Heritage has no business playing varsity football this year. The administration made a terrible decision, putting kids at risk for injury and making the Heritage athletic program a joke in north Georgia. Next time think about the kids instead of the image of a new school!
