CEDARTOWN — For the second straight year the Cedartown Lady Bulldogs scrimmaged the Pepperell Lady Dragons. And for the second straight year, the Lady Bulldogs blanked the girls from Lindale.

After a 7-0 preseason win last year, Cedartown downed Pepperell 3-0 Monday.

“Today was a good day,” Cedartown coach Chris McKelvey said. “We were able to get out there and shake off the rust.

“I saw some good things from the girls. We were fundamentally sound and were able to move runners over in situational hitting. We’ve still got some things to work on, but I liked what I saw.”

Despite not being on the winning side, Pepperell coach Jeff Rickman liked what he saw from his team, too.

“We did some good things,” Rickman said. “I saw positive stuff out there to build on. We will take the next two days to continue to prepare for the real season, but I thought the girls showed some promise.”

The game was a battle of the pitchers while the starters were in as Pepperell’s Cassadee Ainsworth matched Cedartown’s Holly Moore pitch for pitch.

Moore threw four innings and allowed no runs on no hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Ainsworth responded by going five innings, allowing one run on three hits, one walk with two strikeouts.

Cedartown’s lone run against Ainsworth came in the fourth inning when Jolie Mason led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on Kristen Little’s sacrifice fly.

The Lady Bulldogs scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth when Little and Kirstin Prescott recorded back-to-back bunt singles with Little scoring on a Rebecca Roberts sacrifice fly and Prescott scoring on a passed ball.

Pepperell’s lone hit came from Emma Horne to lead off the sixth inning.

“I enjoy scrimmaging Cedartown,” Rickman said. “They are a class program and a good team and playing them allows us to see where we are at. We made some mistakes today and they made us pay, good teams will do that.”

Both Pepperell and Cedartown will kick off the regular season this weekend in the Model Lady Devil-Reebok Fall Classic.

“This weekend is going to be a big test for us,” McKelvey said. “We are scheduled to face some real good teams and it’s going to show us a lot about ourselves.”
