That was the philosophy the Rome High baseball team proved Tuesday afternoon when the Wolves captured their first-ever Region 7-AAAA championship with a 14-5 road win over Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe.
The win, which improves Rome to 11-2 in the region and 19-4 overall, also secures a home-field advantage for the Wolves in the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs that begin next week.
“The kids worked hard all year,” Rome coach Brandon Johnson said. “They deserved this. It shows hard work does pay off.
“When you got good kids who are good players,” he added, “good things happen.”
The Wolves looked good at the plate against LFO as Rome scattered 16 hits, with Tyler Williams heading up the attack going 4-for-5 with six RBI, three of those coming in the first inning when his three-run homer highlighted a four-run outburst.
Cory Thacker also drove in three runs, Alex Kirksey and Jacob Williams each added three hits and drove in a run, Jim Stovall had two hits and two RBI, and Matt Kirksey had an RBI.
Jacob Williams recorded the win on the mound for Rome, pitching six innings.
The Wolves close out the regular season Thursday hosting Northwest Whitfield for Senior Night at Legion Field starting at 5:55 p.m.
