As inclement weather approached Floyd County on Friday, several teams had different experiences in their attempts to avoid the storms.

Calhoun was able to reschedule its game against Sonoraville to 11 a.m., since both schools are on spring break, and came away with a 14-2 win in five innings.

Darlington barely got in the amount of innings necessary to end early, edging Model 5-4.

Armuchee didn’t fair so well as the Indians were up 11-0 over 7-AA South rival Coosa, but had to end the game one inning before it could be counted as a win. The game will start fresh Wednesday, April 23.

Pepperell and Rockmart spent even less time on the field, as the 7-AA South matchup was stopped after two innings. A new date for the game has not yet been set.

Rome High athletics never even got a chance to start. The soccer matches against Dalton were scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. with girls, followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.

The girls rescheduled their match for Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. A date is not yet known for the boys’ match.

The Wolves’ baseball game was also prevented from starting at its set time of 5:55 p.m. The matchup has been moved to Monday at the same time.

In games that were actually completed, No. 3 Calhoun improved to 15-2 overall and 3-0 in 7-AA North with its win.

The Yellow Jackets’ barrage of runs was guided by Jeremy King, who hit a two-run homer and a two-run single, and Jordan Poole, who also blasted a two-run homer and had an RBI-single.

Also at the plate, Brad Moss had two hits and two RBIs, Zach Bradley hit twice, and Carter Harrison and Michael Johnson each hit a two-run double.

Josh Wyatt got the win on the mound, pitching three innings, striking out three and giving up two hits. Walt Hammond threw two innings in relief.

Darlington (9-7, 3-2) was tied 4-4 with visiting 7-AA South foe Model heading into the fifth inning. Evan Brooks and Chase Butler made sure the Tigers walked off their field winners.

Brooks singled, was moved to second and then scored when Butler ripped a single to right field. Brooks finished the game 2-for-3.

Brice Baker needed to pitch only one inning to get the win for Darlington.

“They made some mistakes and we capitalized on them,” Darlington coach Chad Woods said. “We knew we had to score early and be ready for the rain.”

Darlington’s next game will be a makeup game at subregion opponent Rockmart on Monday and Calhoun will travel to Chattooga on Tuesday for subregion play.
