Tennis: No. 8 Lady Jackets shutout LaFayette

The undefeated Calhoun Lady Jackets’ tennis team showed why they are worthy of their No. 8 state ranking with a 5-0 shutout of LaFayette on Tuesday.

The Lady Ramblers (6-3) saw their best chance for a point come up short as Calhoun’s Savannah Konter outlasted Bailey Clements in No. 1 singles, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.

Calhoun would win the rest of the matches in straight sets.

Katie Hutchinson defeated Kayti McCormick, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles while Jodie Reed won at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Michelle Leming.

No. 1 doubles saw Mallory Dean and MacKenzie Kessler beat Mollie Parker and Brooke Trapp, 6-3, 6-1.

Calhoun completed the sweep as Emily Brown and Presley Nance downed Anna Portwood and A.J. McCraine, 6-0, 6-1.

On the boys’ side of the ledger, LaFayette (5-4) got a point at No. 1 singles, but fell to the Jackets, 4-1.

Tyler Cobb got the lone win for the Ramblers with a 6-1, 6-1 straight set win over Brett Silvers.

Joseph Elphingstone won at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Steven Schaub while Calhoun picked up a forfeit win at No. 3.

In doubles, Calhoun’s No. 1 duo of Conner Stewart and John Barton beat Lance Underwood and Kenneth Sartin, 7-5, 6-4.

No. 2 doubles saw Will Travis and Will Jourdain top Will Russell and Cameron Quinn, 6-0, 7-5.
