For the boys, Josh Baue scored two goals in the first three minutes of play, and went on to tally seven total, breaking the Calhoun all-time single game scoring record previously held by Scott Blair with six goals set just last season.
The Yellow Jackets went on to overwhelm visiting Sonoraville 14 - 0 at the RiverPark Soccer Complex.
“Josh gives us 100 percent, 100 percent of the time, and he earns and deserves everything good that comes his way” said Calhoun head coach Ruben Maldonado. “However, this is a team sport, and there were a lot of unsung heroes that made those seven goals possible.”
As far as the effort put out by the Sonoraville squad, Maldonado had nothing but praise for the Matt Rice led Phoenix.
“They just don’t have quite the tradition we have at Calhoun currently, but Matt is a great coach and they have a lot of young talent,” said Maldonado. “It is just a matter of time until they challenge for the league title.”
Also scoring goals in the game for Calhoun were Eric Perez (2), Rafael Maldonado, Miguel Moreno (2), Andy Elakman, Michael Butler and Efrain Martinez.
Assisting on those goals were Jonathan Clark, Sam Maldonado, Moreno, Collin French, Hector Silva and Javier Salazar.
Josh Gregory and Braibin De La Cruz split time at Goalkeeper for Calhoun as they chalked up their third straight shutout.
Michael Butler and Collin French anchored the stingy Calhoun defense as the Jackets ran their season record to 3-1 while staying a perfect 3-0 in the all important Area 13 play.
The Calhoun girls scored often and early in their game, controlling the ball at will.
“I was very pleased with our effort,” said Lady Jackets head coach Jeff Olney. “We had seven consecutive passes across the field and a header for a goal, and I was pleased with that. I tried a few different things in this game that I liked, and I am just really really pleased.”
Calhoun’s Katie Scott led the offensive onslaught with five goals and three assists.
"Katie has really stepped up her game a lot this year,” said Olney. “She is one of our captains and she is a dynamic leader on and off the field. She is a true hustler."
Danielle White knocked in four goals, Brit Gallman netted three, Kimberly Crawford scored two and Breanna Pierce had one goal and one assists.
Sally Peterson, Julia Binnicker and Jenna Joyave had two assists each.
