A surging Calhoun High boys’ basketball team overcame a four-point halftime deficit to claim a Region 7-AA North league victory over the weekend against Dade County at Trenton.

Coach Casey Baxter’s Yellow Jackets prevailed 82-76, extending their subregion record to 2-0. Winning a sixth consecutive game, they lifted the overall record to 10-5.

In the varsity curtain-raiser, the news was not as good. Calhoun’s girls lost to Dade 50-40.

Calhoun’s boys trailed at intermission 38-34. They dominated the third quarter 24-11 to lead into the final eight minutes 58-49.

“We shot the ball a little better in the second half,” Baxter said. “We took care of their pressure a little better. We olayed hard all night.”

Tyler Arnold and Tim Fortenberry combined to score 55 points for the Jackets. The former bucketed 30 and the latter 25.

Rhett McGowan chipped in 13 points. Chandler Rierson contributed nine.

The Wolverines, who dropped to 1-2 in the subregion and 11-4 for the season, were sparked by Grisham’s 23 points.

“We played okay,” Calhoun girls’ coach Jerry Pruett said. “When we subbed several times, they (Lady Wolverines) were able to press us and extend their lead.”

Presley Nance and Bre Johnson netted 13 points apiece to lead the Lady Jackets who dropped to 1-1 in the subregion and 5-10 overall.

Calhoun trailed after one quarter 19-12 and 38-23 at halftime. It pulled within eight points in both the third and fourth periods.

Dade made extensive use of the free throw line where it sacked 16-of-20. Calhoun was 5-of-7.

The Lady Wolverines are unbeaten in the subregion at 3-0 and stand 8-7 for the campaign.

Following games last night at home against county rival Sonoraville, Calhoun’s squads go at home Friday against Adairsville. They journey Saturday to Murray County
