Sonoraville’s basketball coaches Brent Mashburn and Stephanie Caudell saw their teams get swept by Chattooga on Friday and Mt. Paran on Saturday.
The Phoenix boys traveled to Chattooga to begin the weekend and they were treated to an 82-56 loss. The Phoenix hung close early and trailed by only three points (19-16) after the first quarter, but Chattooga kept their offense rolling in the second quarter as they defense stepped it up a notch, and Sonoraville went into halftime down by 13.
The Phoenix put good numbers on the board in the second half, but defensively they struggled allowing 23 points in the third quarter and 21 points in the final quarter.
“Chattooga is a talented team that caused us some match up problems,” said Mashburn. “They were able to dictate the pace and took control of the game early.”
Greg Mulkey led the Phoenix with 19 points and seven rebounds. Cody Walraven had three assists along with 11 points.
For Chattooga, Al Martin had a game high 19 points. Rashad Ramsey netted 17 points and Nic Perry had 13 points.
On Saturday, Sonoraville lost a close game at Mt. Paran 51-46.
The Phoenix played well to start the game and went into halftime with a seven point lead after holding Mt. Paran to only seven points in the first quarter and 10 points in the second quarter.
However, Mt. Paran outscored Sonoraville 16-8 in the third quarter to take the lead and held it throughout the final quarter.
“We came out early, holding them to only 17 first half points,” said Mashburn. “We put them on the line too much in the second half instead of forcing them to make plays to win the game. We need to start finding ways to finish games down the stretch.”
Justin Zachary had a game high 20 points and a team high four rebounds for the Phoenix. Mulkey had nine points and Rashaad Woodberry claimed three assists.
For Mt. Paran, Paul Sparks had a team high 19 points. Steve Morris tallied 14 points.
*Tough losses for girls*
The girls lost to Chattooga 59-47 and Mt. Paran 42-31.
Against Chattooga, the Lady Phoenix fought hard and only trailed by one point at halftime and four points after three quarters. The team, though, struggled in the final quarter as they were outscored 22-12. Chattooga had a 24 point performance by Joy Hoskins.
“Hoskins had a great game and we could not slow her down,” said Caudell. “They are an aggressive team, and tonight we couldn’t handle it. Miranda McDaniel and Noelle Defoor played well for us offensively, but we couldn’t get them enough touches down the stretch because of turnovers.”
McDaniel had a team high 14 points for the Lady Phoenix and Defoor followed closely with 13 points. Erika Thomas also hit double digits with 10 points.
On Saturday the Sonoraville girls played well defensively against Mt. Paran, but could not muster enough offense for the win.
The Lady Phoenix were again led by McDaniel, who managed 12 points. For Mt. Paran, Katherine Freeman had a game high 15 points.
“This was one of our best defensive performances of the year,” said Caudell. “We just had a hard time putting the ball in the basket.”
