Chattooga gains big win, revenge
With just the second play from scrimmage, Chattooga’s Senorise Perry announced his arrival at Armuchee’s reservation.
And with the rest of his team behind him, they followed every twist and turn of Friday night’s game with confidence as Chattooga defeated Armuchee 36-20.
In a battle between the undefeated Indians, the Summerville school fed off an onside kick in the end of the second quarter to pull away from the hosts and spoil their unblemished record.
“We’re preaching to these kids that it’s a team effort and all night long it took our whole team to win this game,” first-year Chattooga head coach Brad Waggoner said, whose team is now 4-0 for the first time since 2001.
“Armuchee is a good football team … but I thought our kids did a very good job of handling adversity at the beginning of the game.”
Perry finished with three touchdowns and 98 yards on eight carries while his teammate, Fabian Brown, had 102 yards and six points on eight touches as well.
“For some reason, we didn’t play well but they had an awful lot to do with that,” Armuchee head coach John Mullinax said. “They are a very talented football team and a well coached football team.
“There were a few bright spots and we’ll get over this. I still think we’ve got a good football team.”
A big wave of momentum went Chattooga’s way when they mounted a punishing two-minute drill near the end of the first half.
After Brown and quarterback Rashad Ramsey got the ball to the Armuchee 14, Perry pushed through on fourth-and-1 to put Chattooga up 21-14 with 38.5 seconds before halftime.
Chattooga then came out with an onside kick that caught Armuchee (4-1) off guard as Chattooga’s Olajuwon Blair recovered the ball on the Armuchee 40-yard line.
A 38-yard pass from Ramsey to Bradley Black saw the junior receiver leap in the air and be called down at the two.
Chattooga was given a penalty on the next play to move the ball to the seven but it didn’t deter them from scoring as Ramsey passed to Brown on the outside who got into the end zone with 16.3 seconds left.
Ramsey’s kick was no good but Chattooga had dealt Armuchee a serious blow by going up 27-14 at halftime.
“It was a big play,” Waggoner said of the onside kick that led to the 13-point lead. “They were backing up and there was a little crease over there and Olajuwon did a great job of catching that in the air.”
Armuchee was held to only three yards of offense in the third and kicker Tommy Harris, who had produced a good night for the home team, was called for a safety when a flubbed punt saw him panic in the end zone try to throw the ball away, which was ruled an illegal forward pass.
After Ramsey completed a 21-yard pass to Spencer London to start the game, Perry, a senior, slipped through Armuchee’s defenses and ran 59 yards for a touchdown with just 20 seconds ran off of the clock.
Ramsey then switched roles and made his first of four PAT’s to give Chattooga a 7-0 lead.
Armuchee, guided by quarterback T.C. Boyd in the Indians’ triple option offense, marched 62 yards on its first drive and scored on a one-yard run by Blake Poole with Harris making his first of only two extra points.
Boyd had a 10-yard touchdown run with 6:07 left in the second quarter to lead to a 14-14 tie.
Armuchee is at Pepperell next Friday and Chattooga hosts Sonoraville as both teams begin Region 7-AA subregion play.
