The Cedartown Bulldogs will be entertaining a team Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Cedartown Memorial Stadium on Doc Ayers Field that they haven’t played since 1981.

That team, the Lithia Springs Lions, is a team that hasn’t won more than four games since 1999 but opened last week with a solid 15-0 win over Haralson County.

Bulldogs head coach Scott Hendrix said the Lions will present a challenge because of their team’s speed.

“(They have) a lot of speed,” Hendrix said. “They are pretty athletic.”

Against the Rebels, the Lion's running back Rodney Cross ripped off runs of 63 and 61 yards and had a four-yard touchdown jaunt.

Despite Lithia Springs' knack for running the ball, they didn’t line up in a traditional running formation.

“They didn’t throw a lot against Haralson County,” Hendrix said. “But they line up in the spread.”

Even though Lithia Springs has speed, they will be facing a defense from Cedartown that played well last week except for two big plays.

Hendrix said that wasn’t the only side of the ball to play well against the Yellow Jackets in a shortened 14-0 loss.

“From Pepperell to Rockmart we improved quite a bit on defense,” Hendrix said. “And the special teams played pretty well.”

The Bulldogs loss in the Polk County Championship – their first to Rockmart since 2007 – went only two plays into the third quarter before bad weather arrived. After an hour-and-a-half lightning delay, the non-region game was called.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been a part of one that was stopped,” Hendrix said. “I’ve been in some that were postponed before, but not stopped.”

Hendrix said Monday that he wasn’t sure how his team would respond to that loss.

“I don’t know, I haven’t been here,” Hendrix said. “In practice they tend to work hard and do the things we ask them to do and I expect that this week as well.”

The first-year Bulldog's leader hopes that Cedartown opens the 2010 home season in front of a large fan base.

“I hope to have a good crowd,” Hendrix said. “It’s always exciting to play at home. We had a good crowd at Rockmart and I hope they continue to support us on this journey as we try to rebuild this program.”

Editor's note: Aaron's Rents NASCAR Winstop Cup Race Car will be at Cedartown Memorial Stadium Friday as will Aaron's mascot.
