Brandi Hughes is on a power trip.

And several of her teammates are joining in, too.

Hughes showed her strength — both on the mound and in the batter’s box — on Thursday during Rockmart’s 10-0 road win over Coosa that enabled the Lady Jackets to stay unbeaten in 7-AA South.

Hughes, a senior, tossed an overpowering perfect game, striking out 13 of the 18 batters she faced in the run-ruled shortened game. She also mashed a two-run homer to center field, her fourth of the season.

Teammate Janell Echols also went deep, connecting for a solo shot in the second inning, and Alex Copelan banged out a pair of hits, including a double, to help steer the powerful Rockmart attack.

The Lady Jackets, who finished as the Class AA runners-up last season, improved to 7-2 overall and 5-0 in the subregion.

“We’re just stepping it up right now,” said Copelan. “We heard a lot of people say that we weren’t going to be as good this year as we were last year. And that really (motivated) us.”

Hughes has been the catalyst during Rockmart’s surge. She has yet to allow an earned run to a subregion opponent, and is also among the team leaders in virtually every offensive category.

Hughes said she normally does not keep track of how many hits she has allowed — or hasn’t allowed — during a game. But Tuesday was an exception.

“I was keeping up with it in my mind,” said Hughes with a smile. “And in the seventh inning, (first baseman) Hailey (Wheeler) was like, ‘Let’s go.’ She let me know I was getting close.”

Rockmart built an early lead on Echols’ second-inning homer, and steadily added to the lead from there.

Echols finished 2-for-3, adding a double to go with her homer, and had two RBIs. Morgan Brannon and Bennett also added two hits and drove two runs each. Copeland went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

“The offense is gelling, and is getting close to where I want it,” said Rockmart coach Steve Luke.

Luke told the team to savor the feeling of being a part of Hughes’ perfect game: “I told them that this doesn’t happen very often.”

Coosa coach Josh Agan said his team did not make adjustments quickly enough against Hughes.

“We kept trying to do the same thing all game long,” said Agan. “And our problem right now is consistency.”

Coosa visits Pepperell on Thursday.
